Abstract
A new polymeric membrane, designated as a ¢¥one-way¢¥ membrane, was designed to be permeable to ethanol with minimal flux of drug or water. A trilaminate membrane consisting of Silastic Q7-4840, methylhydrodimethydrodinethylsiloxane and cellulose acetate was designed as the one-way membrane. Membrane permeation characteristics were determined from solvent and drug diffusion experiments. The one-way membrane, which provided optimum and constant ethanol activity, may contribute a new concept in the design of transdermal delivery systems as a rate-limiting membrane.
